In the 1990s, the term "road warrior" referred to a businessperson who frequently traveled long distances for work, usually by car or airplane. These individuals were often salespeople, executives, or consultants who traveled to meet with clients or attend business meetings in different cities or countries.
The term "road warrior" was popularized in the 1981 movie "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior," in which the main character, Max, travels across a post-apocalyptic wasteland as a lone warrior. The term was later adapted to describe the frequent business traveler who navigates a modern-day wasteland of airports, highways, and hotels.
In the 1990s, the term "road warrior" was often used in a positive sense to describe the adventurous and dedicated spirit of these businesspeople who were willing to travel great distances to advance their careers. However, it could also imply the stresses and challenges of life on the road, including long hours, jet lag, and time away from family and friends.
I was a road warrior between 1992 and 2000. It had its good elements. The flight attendants knew me and very often gave me extra cookies even if I was flying coach although I often was upgraded to first class. I love the constantly smaller technologies that I could carry with me, cell phone, two-way pager, tablet, and back in the early days, a heavy Mac Apple computer.
To charge your cell phone or laptop in those days you plugged in to an actual old-time coin operated telephone in the airport. And then when you got to your hotel room, there was a wire that you plug into your computer to gain access to the Internet.
At first there weren't any passcodes you needed to use the service and it was free until they began to charge more and more for each hour of use. The most modal thing about being a road warrior to me was that you were living on the road eating fairly crappy food, drinking to put yourself to sleep in a new room on an almost nightly basis, carrying warm clothing and cold clothing depending on where you are headed, and, with technology that very often just didn't work like it was supposed to - "Out Of Range".
I made this short video in 1994 on behalf of the AT&T PersonalLink Service, the network that was supposed to handle all of the messaging and phone calls, etc., to be provided by the General Magic Personal Communicator. Back then I worked for both the incredible startup General Magic and for AT&T. So I got the chance to get behind the scenes and add to the efforts of the engineering team and the marketing folks at both companies. I have posted many videos on my YouTube channel created from the opportunities that I was given to go behind the kimono - the curtain - as they used to say and open just a bit of their Pandora's box… as they used to say.
To get a more complete story of General Magic and AT&T PersonalLink and why they failed, it is worth watching the feature-length documentary titled "General Magic: The Movie". More than 20 minutes of my old footage is in that film. #businesstravel #remotework #cloudcomputing #batterylife #5g #cybersecurity #digitalnomad
