Did You Know?
The Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag is one of the tallest and oldest bell towers in the Philippines, standing about 45 meters high. Built by Augustinian friars around 1612, it earned its name because it sinks roughly an inch every year! Why? Its massive weight rests on soft, sandy soil, causing it to slowly descend into the ground.
Originally, a man on horseback could pass through its entrance—today, you’d have to stoop! Despite centuries of earthquakes, this Earthquake Baroque-style structure still rings its bells for St. William’s Cathedral, located about 80 meters away. Truly a mysterious and enduring piece of history!
Location: Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Philippines
Fun Fact: It’s said that in 1,000 years, the tower might be completely buried!
