Based on Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, Mason Bates’s new opera follows two cousins as they create a popular comic-book series in the 1930s and ‘40s. As their superhero creation liberates victims of tyranny in issue after issue of The Escapist, they must do battle with the real-world forces of fascism, homophobia, and intolerance. But for all its thrilling scope, Bates’s eclectic score never loses sight of the humans at the heart of this epic tale, and the end result deftly balances edge-of-your-seat excitement with heartbreaking pathos.
