Welcome to my exploration of the incredible biodiversity found in plant communities. In this series, I’ll uncover how ecology and evolution shape the rich variety of plant life we see today. Join me as I dive into the forces that drive and sustain the complexity of our natural world. Why are there so many species? At a single site with the same climate, soil and resources, how can there be 64 species? Why not just one or two ‘most efficient’ species?
In this Part 10: understanding biodiversity requires understanding what happens throughout the year. Small herbs have an advantage when larger plants find growth difficult (e.g. after mowing and in the cold). So, many orchids time their growth phase during the winter when competition is limited. Allowing plants with very different forms, life-cycles and survival 'strategies' to share the habitat. In Ecology, exploitation of different resources or opportunities, allowing coexistence, is known as 'niche partitioning'.
