A review of the Millenium Chess Genius Exclusive! This machine has been long anticipated, because it is the only dedicated, yet affordable wooden chess computer on the market today. It packs premium features: autosensory board, piece recognition, square lights, strong engine, portability, optional: alternative engine (The King), remote engines and online play (via ChessLink). With HIARCS, for instance, you get a very strong program with self-adapting strength and the option to evaluate your ELO rating.
Unfortunately, my unit had an old firmware version (which I did not check before filming), so sliding the pieces over the board was not possible. I installed the updated firmware - the process is very straight forward - and now sliding is possible.
Pros:
Nice board and piece quality (not excellent, though)
Board size is in the sweet spot between portability and overview
Square lights (LED) show moves - you can keep your focus on the board during playing
Satisfying playing experience (except sounds, see below)
Modular concept: different chess computer is available, online / remote engine capability can be also added
Strong and customisable programm, challenging for casual players, club players and even tournament players
Good customer support, long-standing company
Cons:
RRP slightly too high
Connection cable (computer to board) is a little stiff and probably too long
Sounds are annoying. They can be switched off, however, it would have been better if they had settings like : "only beep to announce opponent move"
Some batches seem to have quality issues
Please consider:
Many reviews of this machine are unfavourable and don't do it justice. The "high" RRP is often criticised in relation to what you get. Most consider it too high by 25%. However, the same goes for the DGT Revelation, which in my opinion should rather be a RRP 2000€ board than a 3000€ board.
Evaluation:
************
Price 4 ($500-1000) with board
Strength 4 (Master)
Usability 4 (comfortable)
Collectability 3 (sometimes hard to find)
Overall score 75 out of 100
