STORYLINE
As Jews in France debate whether or not to wear the traditional Kippa or skull-cap as a personal safety measure, residents of Jerusalem on Wednesday offered their views on the issue.
Following a machete-attack on a Jewish teacher in Marseille, a leading Jewish authority asked fellow Jews on Tuesday to refrain from wearing their traditional skull cap to stay safe.
The call from Zvi Ammar, head of the Israelite Consistory of Marseille, came a day after a 15-year-old Turkish Kurd attacked and wounded a Jewish teacher on a street in France's second-largest city, then told police after his arrest that he acted in the name of the Islamic State group.
Ammar said his decision to ask Jews not to wear the kippa was the hardest of his life.
Jerusalem residents were mixed in their reactions, with some saying they understood Ammar's fears, whilst others said Jews in France should not be afraid of showing their faith.
A Jerusalem Kippa shop-owner, Maya Tzidon, said she noticed that foreign Jews coming to her shop tended to purchase the darker coloured Kippa which are less conspicuous.
Israel's Science, Technology and Space Minister Ofir Akunis called on Jews living in France, home to the world's third largest Jewish population, to immigrate to Israel "rather than to continue to live the ever more complicated life in France."
According to the Jewish Agency, a nonprofit group that works closely with the government and acts as a link for Jews around the world, a record 7,200 French Jews arrived in 2014, double the number for the previous year.
France's Jewish community of 500,000 is the largest in Europe.
