Any video is basically fast-changing pictures or, more precisely, frames. In order for our brains to perceive a set of frames as a moving picture, those frames need to be shown at a certain speed - usually 24 or 30 frames per second. This speed is measured in Frames per Second or simply FPS. Usually, videos have an FPS rate of at least 24. But you can shoot a video with higher or lower FPS values. If you want to make a slow-motion video, you need to shoot at a speed of 48, 60, 120 or more FPS and play it at the standard rate of 24 or 30 fps. This ratio works in the opposite direction, too. If you shoot at 12 frames per second and play it back at 24 frames per second, you will have a double-time video.

Today, we’re going to tell you about a second kind of speed-adjusted video - time-lapse video. There are plenty of subjects you can choose from for your own video: sunrise or sunset, moving clouds, city lights at night, plants growing, a construction process, drawing or other creative processes, flower buds opening, any beautiful natural landscape, a starry night, and more.

Some digital cameras, smartphones, and tablets have a built-in time-lapse shooting mode. But today we’re going to talk how to shoot time-lapse on almost any digital still camera. So, how many photos do we need to make a time-lapse video? Let’s do some calculations. Suppose we display 1 frame every 2 seconds. 30 minutes of shooting = 1800 seconds of shooting / 2 = 900 frames / 30 frames per second - video playback speed = 30 seconds of finished video.

Some shooting tips:
👍 Use a tripod and a remote control. It is important for all the frames to be shot from the same viewpoint and without any accidental shaking, hence the need for a remote control. This will help us take pictures without touching the camera and avoid any unwanted distortion.
👍 Activate the stopwatch and press the shutter every 2 seconds. We need frames taken at regular intervals.

Now we need to create a video from our 900 photos.
Step 1. Upload the photos to your video editor. We use Movavi Video Editor.
Step 2. Select all of them. On the toolbar, find the "Clip properties" tab.
In the "Videos" tab, there is a "Duration" option, where you can set the duration of each frame. Divide 1 second into the desired FPS, for example, 30. You can type in the result manually. 0.033 seconds.

All done! Simple, right? We hope this video will encourage you to make your own time-lapse.
