The GR54 is a 120mi/193km thru-hike in the French Alps with 37,100ft/11,300m of elevation gain.
GR stands for "grandes randonnées" which means "big hikes" and it's a network of longer hikes mainly in France. (You may have heard of the Tour du Mont Blanc, which is also a GR, and very popular around the world).
The GR54 was on my bucket list for 6 years after living in France, and in July 2025, I finally did it with my childhood friend.
This is what it was like to do this 12-day trek, including the views, where we stayed, and what we ate.
This trek was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it was so empowering to go from wondering if it was even possible to completing it.
