Inside look at the WW2 US Army LT class tugboat, the Ludington. This tug is design 271 by the US Army, laid down in 1942. It was manufactured in Oyster Bay, N.Y. at Jakobson Shipyard. This boat was originally designated the LT-4 when it was placed into service in 1943. In 1944 it was officially named Maj. Wilbur F. Browder (LT-4) and participated in, among others, the invasion of Normandy by pulling supply barges across the English Channel.

For the last part of the war this Large Tug (LT) class tugboat was assigned to Plymouth, England until being transferred to the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1947 at Kewaunee, WI. It remained in active service until 1998 when it was retired, sold to the City of Kewaunee, and repurposed into a public museum on water.
The museum offers a fantastic view into the inner workings of a tugboat and the life of the crew who lived aboard the vessel. For a small fee you can roam nearly the entire ship. You can explore the engine room, the crew living area, the pilot house, and around the exterior of the ship.
