GH¢8.1bn Audit Plunder: Public Accounts Committee Must Be Given Prosecutorial Powers – Kofi Acquah
A governance advocate, Kofi Acquah, has called for sweeping reforms to strengthen parliamentary oversight in the wake of revelations that about GH¢8.1 billion in public funds were lost through financial irregularities highlighted in recent audit reports. According to him, the situation demonstrates why Public Accounts Committee of Parliament should be granted prosecutorial powers to hold public officials directly accountable.
Mr. Acquah argued that although the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) plays a crucial role in examining reports from the Ghana Audit Service, its current mandate is limited to questioning public officials and making recommendations. He believes the absence of enforcement authority weakens the committee’s ability to ensure that those responsible for financial mismanagement face justice.
