Kaligandaki A HydroPower Plant 144 Mw has three Diversion Gates.
Diversion Gate No.1, Diversion Gate No. 2 & Diversion Gate No. 3 with only one Bascule Gate. In the video shown,is the Opening of Diversion Gate No. 1 by 30 cm because the discharge in the river was 455 m3/s much more then design discharge of 141 m3/s to take care of Water level contained in the Dam.
Diversion dams are meant to allow excess flow in the river during flood times to flow down stream.While during low discharge periods they are meant to impound water in the Reservoir and increase water level. Water is diverted into an artificial water course or canal, which may be used for irrigation or return to the river after passing through hydroelectric generators, flow into a different river or be itself dammed forming a reservoir.
