STORYLINE:
Historic buildings in the ancient city of Aleppo, Syria have sustained terrible damage due to the intensity of fighting between the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the forces of Bashar Assad's regime.
Footage from the city shows buildings reduced to rubble and streets lined with debris following weeks of indiscriminate bombardment by tanks and helicopters.
The city is largely deserted, as families fleeing the violence have shut down businesses and left homes.
In all, around 90 percent of the businesses in Aleppo have closed and more than half the civilians have left town.
Regime forces and Free Syrian Army members are embedded in buildings throughout the city exchanging fire and launching bombs and rockets at each other.
Stores along Al-Aryan, the street leads to the heart of the old town, have been destroyed by shrapnel and artillery used by government troops trying to fight rebels hidden in the Qastal Harami area's buildings.
The 300-year-old Qastal Harami mosque has been bombed by the regime on several occasions and its minaret and part of the roof has been partially destroyed by tanks.
The street Al-Malek Ibn Dhi Syaf, next to the Qastal Harami mosque, leads to another rebel checkpoint.
