Key characteristics:
History: The Xaxado is a dance and musical rhythm that originated as a war dance among the cangaceiros, or bandits, of the Brazilian Northeast in the early 20th century. It was popularized by the legendary bandit leader Lampião and his group, who used it as a celebratory and defiant expression. The dance is performed with a distinct stomping rhythm, representing the sound of their leather sandals (called alpercatas) on the dry ground.
Geography: This rhythm is deeply rooted in the Northeastern interior of Brazil, specifically the semi-arid region known as the sertão. Its history is inseparable from the social and geographical conditions of this harsh, remote area.
Rhythm and Percussion: The rhythm is a simple but powerful 2/4 time signature (in Europe and U.S. it is usually written in 4/4 cut time or 2/2) with a strong, syncopated backbeat. Before its adaptation to the drumset, the rhythm was primarily created by the dancers themselves through the rhythmic stomping of their feet. It was also accompanied by a triangle, a zabumba (a double-headed bass drum), and an accordion (sanfona).
