The British philosopher wrote her dissertation under none other than John Rawls. Her philosophical interlocutor, however, is first and foremost Immanuel Kant. But she is not interested in pure exegesis; rather, she always focuses on questions that have a practical application. Her articles on global justice, on our responsibility towards those who are starving, on reproduction medicine or human rights have all become classics. This also holds true for O’Neill's contentious thesis that trust holds no value in and of itself, and that attempts of control are no better. Instead of speaking of trust, we would do better to talk of trustworthiness; instead of demanding trust, we should give others a reason to trust us. What does that mean for politics? Barbara Bleisch asks her about this and more.
