After receiving a multiple sclerosis diagnosis at age 32, Rick Ebner began treatment using the HydroWorx 1000 hydrotherapy pool. His rehab sessions with the underwater treadmill have helped him gain significant strength, balance, capability and confidence for enhanced mobility on land.
In college, Rick was an athlete. He played running back on the football team and was a wrestler. However, early symptoms of multiple sclerosis forced him out of the athleticism he loved and limited his mobility beyond basic movement. It was at this point that Rick's doctors suggested aquatic therapy.
This video explores what Rick does in a typical physical therapy session and goes over the exercises that have enabled him to regain mobility. He and his physical trainer start by using the underwater treadmill to warm up. Rick walks, ensuring his strides are long and stretching all his muscles. Then, he performs sidestep, jogging and backward walking exercises. The underwater treadmill can run at any speed up to 8.5 miles per hour, so he can practice moving at different speeds.
Once Rick has finished all of these motions, his physical therapist turns on the pool's resistance jets, which add an extra challenge to his workout. The jets allow him to build core strength while completing the same exercises. The physical therapist has him stand on one leg as he increases the jet's resistance until they're at near-maximum resistance. The resistance jets are excellent for increasing workout difficulty, but they can also function as deep tissue massagers and other therapeutic tools.
Completing physical therapy underwater is especially helpful for anyone with mobility issues due to pain or injury. The water supports much of a person's body weight, reducing stress on limbs and joints. Rick discovered this firsthand as the HydroWorx therapy pool allowed him to run, jump and complete other physical activities that he hadn't been able to do in years. As he builds up strength underwater, he can bring his exercises on land and slowly regain his range of motion.
