The Stephenson's Rocket Replica at the National Railway Museum - Locomotion in Shildon. It was built in 1979 and modified in 2004 to what it is today. The original version of Stephenson's Rocket can be seen at both National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon.
This video has been taken from my Locomotion Shildon videos, where I visit the Great Hall, New Hall, and have talks with gentlemen in regards to Stephenson's Rocket (Replica), built in 1979, and the steam locomotive Black Five (5000), which was built at Crewe in 1935 and was initially the first numerically of its class.
This video just features Stephenson's Rocket Replica with added locomotive part descriptions and isolated voice for the Stephenson's Rocket Replica talk, and shows the Stephenson's Rocket Replica in motion.
The Stephenson's Rocket Replica experience:
The Rocket Replica reverses past the Locomotion Museum towards the start of the track and then makes its way along the track, parallel to the current train line to Shildon. The Stephenson's Rocket experience costs £4 per person (Free for under 5's). It is on select days, so check the website for more information, as there is a diesel shunter that also goes along that train line.
The original Stephenson's Rocket was designed and built by Robert Stephenson in 1829, and built at the Forth Street Works of his company in Newcastle upon Tyne. Though Rocket was by no means the first steam locomotive, it was the first to bring together several innovations to produce the most advanced locomotive of its day. It is the most famous example of an evolving design of locomotives by Stephenson that became the template for most steam engines in the following 150 years.
The locomotive was preserved and displayed in the Science Museum in London until 2018, after which it was briefly exhibited at various sites around the U.K. until it came to rest at the National Railway Museum in York. Since 2023, it has been based at the Locomotion Museum in Shildon.
The Locomotion museum in Shildon is an impressive collection of trains, locomotives, and rolling stock. I highly recommend this museum to everyone. It is ideal for railway enthusiasts, families, and accessible for prams, scooters, and wheelchairs. They have events on throughout the year and run the Stephenson's Rocket Replica for a small fee. For up-to-date information, opening times, and events, see their website for more details: https://www.locomotion.org.uk/
