San Diego: Funny Harbor Seals at Children's Pool in La Jolla

Описание: On an absolutely gorgeous morning we decided to explore one of San Diegos most popular destinations: La Jolla. This upscale district of San Diego is famous for its gorgeous coastline along the Pacific Ocean which features the famous La Jolla Cove and the scenic Ellen Browning Scripps Park right at the waterfront. Just steps away from the shoreline, Prospect Street is lined by upscale boutiques, galleries and eateries. The luxurious La Valencia Hotel has been a landmark in the Village since the 1920s. La Jolla is a wealthy seaside resort community that is popular with jet setters and tourists alike.



We explored the waterfront and I was particularly enchanted by the colony of harbor seals lazing in the sun at the so-called Childrens Pool. This area indeed used to be a protected swimming area for youngsters, but harbor seals have staked their claim here since 1994. Since then the Childrens Pool has become a popular place for seal watching. Strolling further south along the shoreline along Wipeout Beach we enjoyed gorgeous views over the Pacific Ocean from the cliff-top walkway.



On our way south to San Diego we stopped briefly at Mission Bay Park, which boasts 43 km of coastline, various sports and picnic areas and paved paths for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. Our main destination today was Coronado, the peninsula that shelters the San Diego harbour from the onslaught of the Pacific Ocean. We headed across the imposing San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge and found a tiny little waterfront park that provided us with an absolutely stunning view of downtown San Diego.



After this scenic excursion we stopped for an enjoyable 9 holes at the Coronado Municipal Golf Club which offers great views of the San Diego coastline and very affordable green fees. We finished our 9 holes just as the sun started to set and headed westwards to take in one of the true landmarks of Coronado: the historic Hotel del Coronado, opened in 1888 and constructed completely of wood. The Hotel del Coronado is one of the few surviving grand hotels made exclusively of wood.



The sun was starting to set now and we were treated to a spectacular display of colours: hues of orange, peach, purple and pink adorned the sky until the grand finale when the sea sank into the Pacific Ocean.



For dinner we headed back into downtown into a small Indian restaurant right next to the Horton Plaza shopping mall. The famous Gaslamp Quarter was coming to life with countless tourists and locals in search of a great meal and evening entertainment.
