Life as a beekeeper in Cambodia is closely tied to nature, tradition, and patience. Many beekeepers live in rural areas where forests, orchards, and rice fields provide rich sources of nectar. Their days often begin early in the morning, when the air is cool and the bees are calm. Wearing simple protective clothing, they carefully check hives made from wooden boxes or traditional hollow logs.
Cambodian beekeepers depend heavily on seasonal changes. During the dry season, when flowers from mango, longan, cashew, and wild forest plants bloom, the hives are strong and honey production is high. In the rainy season, beekeepers focus more on protecting the hives from excess moisture, ants, and pests. Some migrate their hives to better flowering areas, especially near forests or plantations.
Beekeeping is often a family activity. Skills and knowledge are passed down through generations, and children learn early to respect bees and understand their behavior. The work requires calmness and care—moving too fast or roughly can disturb the bees. Smoke from dried leaves or coconut husks is commonly used to gently quiet them during honey collection.
Honey harvested in Cambodia is usually raw and natural, valued for its rich flavor and medicinal qualities. Many beekeepers sell their honey in local markets or to small cooperatives, providing an important source of extra income alongside farming. Despite challenges like deforestation and climate change, beekeeping remains a peaceful and meaningful way of life, reflecting a deep connection between people, bees, and the Cambodian landscape. 🍯🐝
