The residents in the neighborhood have complained heavily about how the local authorities have left the sidewalk abandoned for years without taking any action to improve it. Overgrown weeds and piles of trash have made the street look messy, unsafe, and unpleasant, affecting the urban landscape. When our group voluntarily came to clean up the area, we were unexpectedly confronted by an elderly man living nearby who misunderstood our intentions. At first, he became angry, thinking we were government workers finally coming to clean up, and scolded us harshly, saying, “Now you decide to show up?” However, after we calmly explained that we were just volunteers who came on our own to help clean up the street, the elderly man — who turned out to be the owner of the sugarcane garden next door — gradually softened. Still, he expressed frustration, questioning why it was volunteers doing the job instead of the government. After venting his anger for a while, he eventually calmed down. In the end, he even smiled, apologized for his harsh words, and, as a kind gesture, gifted us two fresh sugarcanes from his garden — both as a thank-you and an apology. This small story left everyone who witnessed it feeling deeply touched.
