Hou Hsiao-hsien's 1989 film, A City of Sadness, is a landmark film in the history of Taiwanese cinema. Being the first movie to openly deal with the 228 incident, I discuss the impacts of political cinema under repression. By connecting the work to the Third Cinema movement helmed by South American collaborators Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas, I draw similarities between its ideological tenets to the cinematic techniques that Hou employs.
