Residents of the Sibbinda constituency in the Zambezi region have called on the government to reform the social grant system which sees vulnerable children and families being given grants. Residents say it is better to train and capacitate these individuals to enable them to create their own jobs to sustain their lifestyles. They told the National Council standing committee on health, social welfare, and labour affairs that the current amount given as a social grant is not sufficient to address their challenges, and the system only encourages dependency. The committee was in the Zambezi region recently to assess the status of various healthcare facilities and evaluate the effectiveness of the social grant.
