It's important to know the best foods rich in iron in order to learn how to prevent iron deficiency.
Iron deficiency is the most common and widespread nutritional deficiency and contributes to death and disability worldwide. It’s the only nutritional deficiency that is so prevalent in industrialized countries, meaning that YOU have chances of being deficient.
Luckily, following some easy guidelines and eating from a list of foods rich in iron can get you right back on track.
In this video, I start by discussing the health benefits of iron. Iron is a mineral that has many important biological functions. Most of the iron in your body is found in your red blood cells, which contain a protein called hemoglobin. This protein transports oxygen in your blood to all the organs in your body, and couldn’t function without iron.
This is why consuming enough iron is very important. I also talk about signs that you may not be consuming enough iron, heading towards an iron deficiency and anemia. One of these signs is being exhausted and energy-deprived.
I then give you my list of top 8 foods rich in iron. These include animal sources of heme iron and vegetarian sources of non-heme iron. The foods include shellfish, organ meats, red meat, spinach, legumes, tofu, dark chocolate, and spirulina.
Finally, I also address the side effects of getting too much iron. Like many nutrients, getting too little or too much of it can be harmful. You must find the right balance!
