Every family history researcher knows that a gravestone is just the end of someone’s story, and a walk around an old churchyard can often reveal some fascinating details about the lives of people who once lived in a particular area.
This video takes the parish church of St. Mary Madgalene, in my home town of Clitheroe, Lancashire, as a starting point to learn more about some of the people who were connected to the church in past centuries.
By delving into some of the building’s famous (and infamous) associations, I’ll also explore a whole host of apparently unconnected subjects; if you can’t think of a reason why chemistry, witchcraft, murder, surgeons, Captain Cook, the Bishop of Rochester and George III could possibly be connected, you’ll find the answer in this very brief look at the history of a single church.
Please excuse the background noise in some of the outdoor footage; the microphone on my camera is a bit more sensitive than I’d like it to be sometimes.
