SANTA MONICA, CA โ Thursday, January 8, 2026 โ Crews from Ace Fencing were observed Thursday installing temporary fencing along the Santa Monica Pier as part of ongoing preparations for the Pier Bridge Replacement Project.
The fencing installation began Thursday and is intended to establish a protected construction zone while crews build a temporary vehicle ramp that will maintain operational access to the pier during bridge construction. The fencing is expected to remain in place for approximately five months while the temporary ramp is constructed.
Officials have stated that no pier closures are required for this phase of work and that access for businesses, visitors, deliveries, and emergency services will not be impacted.
The temporary ramp will allow construction vehicles and equipment to move between the pier deck and adjacent work zones while minimizing disruption to public circulation. The protected work area is intended to separate active construction operations from pedestrian and visitor areas for safety and logistical efficiency.
The Pier Bridge Replacement Project will replace the 86-year-old bridge connecting Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue to the Santa Monica Pier, a structure originally built in 1939. The new bridge is designed to meet modern seismic and safety standards, improve pedestrian flow, expand accessibility, and provide a projected service life of approximately 75 years. The project is being advanced in preparation for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
Construction is expected to continue through the end of 2027. Throughout the project, pier restaurants, shops, parking facilities, and public access are planned to remain open, with temporary pedestrian bridges and vehicle ramps used to maintain continuity of operations.
Shimmick Construction Company, Inc. is serving as the prime contractor on the approximately $35 million project. About 75 percent of the funding is provided through the Federal Highway Bridge Program, with the remainder coming from local transportation sources.
Santa Monica Closeup continues to document public infrastructure projects and civic improvements as they unfold.
