THE SCHOOL
This OCAD satellite campus is meant to serve as a beacon for the lower junction triangle. The project’s industrial-contemporary design pays homage to the industrial roots of the neighborhood yet, nevertheless, acts as a catalyst for the ongoing regeneration of the area. This style of design is fulfilled by incorporating aesthetic elements, such as a medley of steel, concrete, and glass, that marries the downtown campus with the surrounding locale.
As this is a cross-disciplinary school, the programming is intended to spark a dialogue between the different art and design specialties. By keeping the various specialized studios visually exposed, the students are on display as much as their artwork. Furthermore, the various disciplines are connected by the distribution of gallery spaces that are interwoven throughout the interior and the exterior. This includes the two atria which further serve to flood and connect the circulation and programmatic spaces with natural light.
THE CHURCH
The church’s design is inspired by iconography associated with Saint Joseph who is revered as the patron saint of workers under the Catholic tradition. Emblematic of his work as a carpenter, the church focally features wood as both a decorative and structural material.
With respect to form, the design consistently makes use of smooth curvilinear contours that are reminiscent of the undulating petals of a lily, hailed as Saint Joseph’s flower. Down the rows of arches that line the aisles, this symbolism reaches its climax with the pleated configuration of the apse tower which embodies the appearance of a lily in bloom. As a complement to this recurrent lily imagery, white accents, and sky-facing windows imbue the space with an air of divinity, clarity, and bliss.
THE HOUSE
Designed to meet the needs of a home-based yoga instructor, this remotely located two-story house features a design language that is representative of openness and flexibility.
The form is split into two separated massings: a living space and a yoga studio. The latter focally features wooden louver blades that allow natural lighting to be manipulated in accordance with the occupants’ needs. Wooden accents and natural light extend into the residential space in order to appeal to a calming biophilic aesthetic.
Behind the house is an in-ground miniature amphitheater that flexibly functions as a scenic space for entertaining guests, for personal leisure, and for hosting outdoor yoga lessons.
