A board of directors provides leadership to a business. Each board is unique in its makeup, culture, and character; but generally, they contribute foresight, oversight, and insight. That’s what boards do, but what makes board members most effective? To answer this question, we compiled answers from three healthcare leaders that serve on boards of directors. John Glaser is an Executive-in-Residence at the Harvard Medical School Executive Education. He is a former senior vice president of population health, at Cerner Corporation. Previously he was chief executive officer of Siemens Heath Services. Prior to Siemens, John was chief information officer at Partners HealthCare.
John was the founding chair of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the past-president of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). He is the former Chair of the Global Agenda Council on Digital Health, World Economic Forum. He is former Senior Advisor to the US Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.
John serves on the boards of the Scottsdale Institute, National Committee for Quality Assurance, Wellsheet, and Relatient.
John has received numerous industry awards including the John P. Glaser Innovation Award (established by the School of Biomedical Informatics, University of Texas Health Sciences Center), William B. Stead Thought Leadership Award (American Medical Informatics Association) and the Lifetime Achievement Award (CHIME).
John received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has written over 200 articles and three books on the strategic application of IT in health care. He is on the faculty of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics and the Harvard School of Public Health.
Kevin Sharer is the former CEO of Amgen, the largest biotech company in the world. He spent 20 years in the role, growing the company from $1 billion to nearly $16 billion. He is a former chief engineering officer in the Navy and Lieutenant Commander on fast-attack submarines. He has helped with more than 20 major CEO transitions for various companies. He teaches at Harvard Business School, where he is the co-creator of a successful course on the life and role of the CEO.
Melinda J. Mount has been a member of the Cerner Board of Directors since April 2019.
She most recently served as the president of AliphCom, Inc. (d/b/a Jawbone), a consumer technology and wearable products company. Previously, she held various senior level positions at Microsoft Corporation, including corporate vice president and chief financial officer of the online services division and corporate vice president of operations and finance and chief financial officer of the entertainment and device division. Prior to joining Microsoft, Mount served as the vice president of strategy and development at Time Warner, Inc., and executive vice president and co-managing director of the United Kingdom division of AOL Inc. She also previously served as vice president of mergers and acquisitions at Morgan Stanley.
She is vice chairman of the board of directors of Technicolor SA and a member of the board of directors of the Learning Care Group, Inc.
Mount has an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a BBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
