Netflix has made a name for itself as a home for true crime. The platform landed a huge hit half a decade ago with Making a Murderer, and has since doubled down, expanding the reach to include docuseries, reenactments.
The Good Nurse is Netflix’s latest true crime movie and it tells the story of serial killer Charles Cullen, who admitted to killing 29 of his patients, and how his friend aided the police in putting Cullen behind bars. The movie stars Eddie Redmayne as Charles Cullen and Jessica Chastain as Amy Loughren, the “good nurse” who helped the police in their investigation of the serial killer. Here are some details that were missed out on the film.
Charles Cullen’s early life was not mentioned in the movie
Charles was the youngest of eight children and for the most part, had a pretty unhappy childhood. Charles described his childhood as “miserable” and at nine years old, Charles attempted to take his own life and he claims that he attempted it at least 20 times. When Charles was 17, his mother passed away and he dropped out of high school and joined the US Navy. During his time in the US Navy, Charles attempted to take his life again on several occasions and he was later medically discharged. After leaving the Navy, Cullen began studying nursing and graduated in 1986.
Charles Cullen was married and had two children
Why did Charles Cullen murder all those people?
Another detail missed out in The Good Nurse is why Cullen committed his crimes. This is because the serial killer never gave an explanation for his crimes. However in 2013, he told CBS News: “I thought that people aren’t suffering anymore, so in a sense, I thought I was helping.”
Were Cullen and Loughren Really BFFs?
In the film, Loughren and Cullen become very close. She invites Cullen over for dinner, where he reads stories to her two young daughters and helps one rehearse for a play. He also tells her of his troubles with his ex-wife, who won’t let him see their daughters. Loughren, meanwhile, tells him her secret.
Which hospitals investigated Charles Cullen's crimes?
In 1999, he began a job at St. Luke's Hospital in Pennsylvania. He resigned after medication vials were discovered in the disposal bin, rather than aid in the hospital's inquiry.
In Charles Graeber's book about Cullen, it was revealed one nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Allentown in 2001 had heard rumors of Cullen's crimes and shared them with her colleagues. The staff threatened to all quit if Cullen was not immediately dismissed, which he was.
Where is Charles Cullen now?
Newsweek reports Charles Cullen is now incarcerated at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, New Jersey, where he will serve his consecutive life sentences for the rest of his life.
Where is Amy Loughren Now?
When she started working at Somerset Medical Center; Loughren suffered from cardiomyopathy. Vanity Fair reports the heart condition made it hard to breathe and Loughren even had to go to the ER for treatment while at work. Since her work with investigators, Loughren has since had a heart transplant and retired from nursing.
Did Cullen and Loughren remain in touch?
Though Loughren was obviously invested in seeing Cullen arrested, they did have a friendship. After he was imprisoned, they exchanged letters and she even visited him in prison many times. “I really wanted to know if I had harmed someone accidentally and I wanted answers and closure,” she told Glamour UK. “But...I was able to see how charismatic he was and how easy it was to be drawn in. It was a process of being able to forgive myself for not seeing it.”
Was Loughren the First to Raise the Alarm?
After the police show Loughren a report on the drugs Cullen has ordered from the dispensary, she realizes something is really wrong. When it becomes clear the hospital has no intention of assisting the police investigation, she gets in touch with an old friend who is a nurse at a hospital where Cullen used to work. The friend says that when Cullen was on the ward, there were two or three Code Blues (deaths or near-deaths) a night, but after he left there was only one a month. However, the nurse isn’t willing to go to the police to corroborate Loughren’s suspicions because she’s afraid she would lose her job.
In real life, several nurses at hospitals where Cullen had previously worked tried to alert the authorities. However, the resulting investigation was cursory and the case was dropped after eight months for lack of evidence.
