After infiltrating the bowels of Castle Volkihar, the Dragonborn and Serana came across Valerica's laboratory and portal to the Soul Cairn. After the portal was activated the Dragonborn quickly found that his attempts to enter the realm caused him harm. Seeing the problem, Serana proposed two solutions that would grant the Dovahkiin entry: Become a vampire or become partially soul-trapped.
Not liking the idea of part of his soul being trapped and offered to the Ideal Masters, the Dragonborn felt that he had no choice but to temporarily become a vampire. Serana's bite made him a vampire while also granting him the Vampire Lord ability due to her being a pure-blooded vampire.
