Ever curious about how to pick the right display? Learn more about the right displays for both inside and out in this episode of All About Circuits.
In this video, we're going to talk about how to pick the right display for your application. When you look at displays there are a few considerations, size, costs and performance; and we're going to
start by talking about performance. For this we have a few displays that Online
Components sent us from New Haven display. They're all very similar. Actually they're all seven inch capacitive touch, 800 by 480, transmissive type TFT LCDs. But they do have a few key
differences that separates the standard from the premium from the sunlight-readable.
I'm starting with the standard. It's a TFT twisted pneumatic or TN style display and what that means is that you have your display stack up with your backlight, your polarizing glass and your
electrodes and when you apply a voltage to those electrodes it twists that crystal structure inside that liquid crystal and that's how you turn pixels on and off. It's a very cost effective display and it's great for a lot of applications, but as soon as you go into outdoor applications or if you need
something that's better viewing angles, better color reproduction, it's where it falls short.
Now our second display, the Newhaven's premium display and it uses what's called multi domain vertical alignment. Instead of a TN type display, what that means is on that polarizing glass there are some ridges that are placed and that forces some randomization of the crystal alignment. So now when you apply your voltage to your electrodes you get light that's emitted in many different directions and that greatly improves your viewing angle. So if you look at the premium display and
the standard display - as you start to get off-center from the standard display you lose visibility very quickly and with the premium display that's not the case. You can see it from many different
viewing angles, from a much wider area the premium display will also give you better color reproduction and better blacks and it has a brighter backlight.
But it still isn't really sufficient to see it outdoors and so that's where the sunlight-readable display comes in. Now it has an even brighter backlight which helps make it visible when you're in direct sunlight and it has what's call an enhancement film from 3M and what that does is it just maximizes the light that's actually output from the display. So we're going to take these outside and we're going to show you the difference in direct sunlight. So we're outside now and you can see that the sunlight-readable display looks just as good outside as it does inside, while the premium is a little more washed out and the standard you really can't see anything at all. So you can see the different performance characteristics that you have available in these different displays. So what about cost and size? For size these are all available from 1.8 inch to 7-inch and why that's important is that Newhaven offers these all as standard off-the-shelf products. Anytime you can get away from custom and go to something standard, it's going to keep your cost down. So from 1.8 to seven inch with or without touch screens hopefully there's something there that meets your needs. And for more on these displays check out onlinecomponents.com link below
