Hwansan Sunim, the disciple and personal attendant of the most venerated Seon master Songdam Sunim, has spent the past 25 years practicing Seon meditation. Now, following his teacher's orders, he is teaching people the principles and proper method of Seon meditation in English via various media outlets.
Born to an affluent family in New York in 1965, Hwansan Sunim was on a guaranteed path to success and prosperity, having graduated from Harvard with a degree in Comparative Study of Religion. But faced with persistent existential and spiritual questions, he decided to seek answers by visiting Seon master Songdam Sunim at the Yonghwasa Temple in Incheon. After staying at the temple for 2 years, he returned home and began working for a law firm. But it wasn't long until he decided to come back to Korea and join the monastic order in 1990. He has been studying under Songdam Sunim for 25 years and serving him as his personal attendant for 12 years. Last year, under the instructions of his master, he ended the life of recluse to pass on the teachings of Seon Buddhism in ways that are applicable in modern society.

25년째 참선수행을 해오신 '환산스님'
불교의 참선수행법을 영어로 배울 수 있는 법회를 연 환산스님. 그는 일상생활에서 참구하는 방법과 선불교 전통을 외국인에게 알리고자 지난 해 절 밖으로 나왔다. 25년간 송담스님의 시자 소임을 맡아 정신해 오던 중 세상에 참된 수행법을 알리라는 간곡한 부탁을 받고 묵묵히 올바른 참선수행을 알리는데 앞장서게 된 것이다.
1965년 미국 뉴욕에서 태어나고 자란 재미교포인 환산스님. 어릴 적부터 부족함 없이 유복하게 자랐지만 늘 인생에 대한 궁금증과 탄생?죽음에 대한 고찰이 있었던 그는 하버드대 비교종교학을 입학하게 된다. 그곳에서 일본 선불교에 대해 배우게 되고 갈수록 목마름이 커진 그는 한국계 미국인 사회에서 선지식으로 손꼽히는 스님을 수소문하게 된다. 그렇게 인천 용화사의 송담 스님을 알게 되어 무작정 한국을 찾게 된 환산스님. 그 후로 2년간 머물다가 다시 미국으로 돌아가 유명 로펌에서 일하게 된다. 하지만 얼마 지나지 않아 송담 스님의 가르침이 떠올라 다시 한국으로 돌아오게 되고, 1990년 인천용화사에서 출가했다. 올해 87세인 송담 스님의 시자 소임을 12년째 맡고 있는 환산스님. 25년간 참선수행에 매진하다가 지난해 말부터 조심스럽게 세상에 나와 올바른 참선에 대해 알리고 있다.
