THE TREE: 23 feet diameter, 317 feet tall, 2 million pounds

EQUIPMENT FEATURED:
Caterpillar D6 9U Series (1937-1947) D318 engine, cable operated blade, 66 horsepower drawbar, designed for logging and land clearing operations in the Pacific Northwest.

LeTourneau Westinghouse Electric Winch (1934) 20 ton capacity, diesel generator powered, reinforced skid platform mounting, pulley system with 6:1 mechanical advantage.

Bay City Dredge Works Model 442 (1924) 50 HP Charter engine, one yard bucket capacity, 90 degree swing arc, repurposed from riverbank excavation.

THE TREE'S LEGACY:
The redwood stood until 1984 when a Pacific windstorm brought it down at 300 feet up. The stump sent up shoots that are now 60 foot trees themselves. A historical marker stands on the hiking trail built in 1998.

Morrison transferred to eastern Oregon pine operations and retired in 1956. In his 1952 Oregon Timber magazine interview, he said: "We thought we could move anything with enough horsepower. That tree taught us different."
