In today’s video, we are taking a trip back to Pennhurst State School and Hospital but to not check out those buildings, but instead to explore the inside of two houses on campus often not talked about, the superintendents house and the doctor’s house. This is rare footage as there are tons of videos of the campus, but very little if any of these two houses. The state of Pennsylvania constructed Pennhurst to be an institution that would better those with disabilities, but instead, it ended up being one of the states biggest failures. Patients were drugged, beaten, abused, and left in horrible conditions. These patients were both adults and children. It took a lawsuit from a former patient to finally shut down Pennhurst in 1987. The superintendent who helped contribute to the evil and neglect that happened in Pennhurst lived in this massive estate that sat near one of the entrances to the campus. As he and his family lived on this beautiful well-kept estate, the rest of Pennhurst suffered. The other house next to it was called the Doctors House and it was a residence for some of the top doctors of Pennhurst. One of Pennhurst top doctors, Dr Jesse Fear, yes, his last name was really Fear, was said to live in this house for a short period of time. This footage was shot in 2016 and as of today, both houses are now demolished. Join me as we explore the Abandoned Superintendents and Doctors Houses.
