Professional daredevil Felix Baumgartner took the world by storm with his record-breaking Red Bull Stratos skydive in October 2012, delivering a spectacular global live broadcast event and the most concurrent live streams ever reported by YouTube. While the jump itself was plenty impressive, the camera, communications and signal transmission side of the operation presented its own set of unique challenges. In this video, Riedel will provide a comprehensive overview of the complete production and about the technology that helped to bring Baumgartner's supersonic skydive to the masses. The video describes the specially developed RF down link solution for the nine HD cameras. Furthermore it covers the remote control system, which enabled the broadcast production in the TV compound to control all aspects of the cameras 128,100 ft. above the ground. It also explains the distributed antenna setup for the up- and down-links as well as the GPS-based antenna tracking solution. In addition, he covers the technology that enabled voice and data communication between ground control and the capsule as well as Felix when freefalling with supersonic speed. Last but not least, the video describes the design of the fully redundant fiber-based signal transport solution for all video, audio, data and communication signals. This integrated MediorNet backbone provided the flexibility and reliability needed for mission control and broadcast production.
