More than 2,000 people were forced to evacuate overnight after a levee failed along the White River in Pacific, Washington.
The breach happened just after 1:30 a.m., prompting Level 3 “Go Now” evacuations for nearby neighborhoods. First responders went door to door using emergency alerts and helicopters to wake residents as floodwaters quickly rose, trapping cars and forcing water rescues by boat and kayak.
The Pacific Senior Center on Third Avenue Southeast is now serving as an emergency shelter, along with other city buildings. Officials warn that more rain and strong winds later today could further strain already weakened levees across western Washington.
