Discover Axbridge, the smallest town in Somerset UK. This charming town offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life and should be on every visitor's bucket list.
Based near the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, Axbridge is a charming market town on the River Axe. It's 3 miles west of Cheddar Gorge. To the north are the Mendip Hills and to the south are the Somerset Levels. It’s an ideal location for a peaceful break in the Somerset countryside, and is also close to the major cities of Bristol and Bath.
Although it’s Carl’s unlucky day; we have a wonderful time in Axbridge...in this travel guide, we visit its medieval square and share fun ways to explore the town and admire its charming streets. We step back 800 years into King John’s Hunting Lodge and take a look around Axbridge's museum. We admire the town's beautiful church and show you part of the Axbridge Heritage Trail. We enjoy a wonderful cream tea and try to settle a great British debate. Jam or cream first?
Axbridge's medieval history dates back to the Saxon era, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1202, establishing its status as a market town. Today, Axbridge retains much of its historic charm. The town square, lined with historic buildings, eateries and quaint shops is a hub of activity. The 15th-century Church of St. John the Baptist stands proudly overlooking the square and its impressive tower a testament to the town's enduring spirit.
Axbridge is a true haven for history lovers, but there's more to Axbridge than just its rich heritage. The town is surrounded by breathtaking countryside, making it an ideal base for exploring the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels.
Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or simply soaking up the charm of a traditional English town, Axbridge has something for everyone. Come and discover the hidden gem of Somerset!
Thanks for watching.
