Описание: Indonesia was rocked by violent protests in Jakarta and other major cities on Friday, triggered by anger over the rising cost of living and lawmakers’ lavish perks.

The unrest, fuelled by months of frustration, escalated after a rideshare driver was killed during police action, sparking the deadliest riots in decades.

Protests began on Aug 25 in Jakarta before spreading nationwide, as students, workers, and labour groups demanded tax reforms, higher wages, and an end to outsourcing.

On Aug 27, students stormed the West Kalimantan parliament, while two days later, thousands clashed with police outside the national parliament in Jakarta.

Demonstrations also spread to Surabaya, Medan, Banda Aceh, and other cities.

By Aug 29, riots left at least five dead, with parliament buildings torched, homes attacked, and businesses looted.

On Aug 31, President Prabowo Subianto pledged to cut lawmakers’ benefits to ease tensions, as the military moved to secure the capital and government sites.
