As a teacher, I find that teaching linear movements as linear that can later become circular (adding pivots) is a great way for learners to grasp the ideas presented and easily make them more difficult later.
This movement is a very common movement in tango however, as you'll find in later videos, this will be done a bit differently with pivots.
We need to remember that in tango there is a 2,3 or 4 track system we can use. This movement will be on a 3-track system. Leaders, you are utilizing two of the three tracks available and followers, you are only utilizing one of these three tracks. The track the followers are utilizing is in between the leaders two tracks. Leaders, you will alternate from the left track (just left of the partner) and the right track (just right of the partner).
Leaders, be very cautious here that you do not step very far away from your partner. If you do, you will pull your follower off of their single track. Imagine if the follower were walking on a tight rope and you were there to help support them. You can imagine that if you step really far away from their tightrope, it would be more likely that you would pull them off the rope as opposed to be being very close to the rope.
