The earliest settlement in this area was a village of the end of the 5th century. B.C. The settlement continued to develop throughout the Early Bronze Age, and its inhabitants traded bronze alloys in the Black and Aegean seas.
According to Herodotus, the Thracian tribe of Skyrmiads lived on the territory of Sozopol, known as experienced blacksmiths who maintained trade relations with the entire Aegean world.
The island of St. John and the small island of St. Peter are located in Sozopol Bay. Approximately in the VII-IX centuries. before our era, the island of St. John was inhabited by Thracians. After Sozopol (Apolonia) was conquered by the Romans in 72 BC, a lighthouse was built on the island. Next to the Thracian sanctuary, local residents built a temple of Apollo with a 13.2-meter bronze statue of Calamis, which made it easy to see it from the city. A lighthouse, built by French engineers in 1884, still stands on the island, pointing to Burgas Bay. Today, the islands of St. John and St. Peter are part of the nature reserve. More than 70 species of birds nest here, most of which are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The island of Saint Peter also has the largest colony of silver martins in Bulgaria. That is why it is also called Bird Island.
