Description - Batu Arang was once the centre of Malaysia’s coal mining industry during the British occupation in Malaysia. Back in the early 1900s, coal was discovered in this region and by 1930, this small settlement had flourished into a busy township where there was even an airstrip for small planes to land. Amenities like a railway line, police station and even a brick factory was built to suit the working miners and expatriates. Various relics of the town’s industrial past can still be seen through a trail comprising 22 sites which was the initiative of Tourism Selangor back in 2011, granting Batu Arang the status of a heritage town.
