My artworks from this period reimagine hybrid creatures born from the collision of nature and discarded objects. "Bottlefly" is a colossal crocodile with wings made of seaweeds and bottles. "Peacook" is a peacock whose flamboyant tail unfurls with ferns, kitchen utensils, pots, and pans. "Chairybdis" is a monstrous fish, its fins and tails composed of plastic chairs and tangled ferns. Rendered in India ink on 48 x 36-inch canvases, these grotesque fusions of organic life and consumer debris reflect on mass consumerism and the junk we cast into our oceans.
"Flotsam, Jetsam, and Then Some" series emerged after I created hundreds of ink drawings as practice with a new medium, India ink on canvas. Categorizing them into botanicals, reptiles, mammals, sea creatures, and trees, I began cutting and reassembling them into new beings. The invitation to the 2014 exhibit Junk Shop gave me a frame: a world where Lovecraftian-inspired mutations reveal the consequences of our waste.
