Katy left a caravan on the English coast and, almost by chance, chose Buenos Aires as her escape from a lonely winter. In this episode she tells Paul how she arrived with no plan, no Spanish, and fell instantly for the city: the heat of late February, the architecture, and above all the easy smiles of strangers. She talks about trading the UK for a life of buses, new barrios, late nights and a culture where people hug, kiss hello and share mate as if you’ve known them for years.
A lifelong musician and former opera soloist, Katy describes how wandering the streets of Buenos Aires led her to tango music, then to her first classes, milongas and eventually a deep obsession with tango’s poetry, history and emotional power. She tells stories of close embrace, learning lunfardo through lyrics, the ecstatic “flow state” on the dance floor, and why milongas feel like therapy, meditation and community all at once. Between tales of mate rituals, Argentine slang, gringo life and dreams of traveling across Argentina, she explains why tango – and the people of this city – convinced her to stay.
Gringos in Buenos Aires is a conversation series produced by Recoveco Records and Paul Perry (The Host) where expats, immigrants and long-timers share real stories about living in Argentina: sports, work, nightlife, language, romance, and all the culture shock of being a gringo in Buenos Aires. With his signature style and unmatched social skills, Paul has carved out a space as one of Buenos Aires’ most colorful voices—bridging cultures, championing the arts, and turning the expat experience into something unforgettable.
