The Kossoy Sisters are an American folk and bluegrass duo consisting of identical twin sisters Irene Kossoy Saletan and Ellen Kossoy Christenson, born May 11, 1938, in New York City.
They are best known for their close harmony singing and for being part of the 1950s–60s folk revival scene. Their repertoire leaned heavily on traditional American folk songs, old-time ballads, and Appalachian music, often accompanied by guitar and banjo.
In 1956, they recorded the influential album Bowling Green and Other Folk Songs from the Southern Mountains with banjoist Erik Darling (later of the Tarriers and the Weavers).
Their version of the Appalachian ballad “I’ll Fly Away” (from that album) gained new popularity decades later after being featured on the soundtrack of the 2000 Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou?
After their early recordings, they largely stepped back from professional performance, though they occasionally reunited for concerts at folk festivals.
Their music is often praised for its hauntingly pure harmonies and as an authentic representation of the folk revival movement.
