I purchased my Merlin Hamstall Outlast Wax Jacket off of Bike Exif almost two years ago now for 200£ alongside my Merlin Bickford Leather Gloves, link to that review here: • Merlin Bickford Leather Glove REVIEW | Mer... . Both the jacket and gloves have my go-to when I'm riding and i thought I'd make a quick video on what make them so great!
I’ve worn my Merlin Hamstall Outlast Wax Jacket in some of the worst heat imaginable sitting in traffic here in Charleston, and bared some cold 40 degree rides in it. And at that I can definitively say that this jacket offers the best of both worlds: quality vintage styling and optimal thermal comfort.
One of the nice touches that caught my eye on this jacket specifically is the waxed cotton and detailing. The waxed cotton is a quality piece of canvas created in Scotland. While the jackets are made from 100% cotton, the waxed coating protective barrier is sufficient enough to protect against both wind and water, allowing the jacket to still provide some breathability. Merlin backs this up with the waterproof and breathable membrane to provide extra support to the wax.
The main highlight of this jacket however is surprisingly not the waxed cotton or Merlin Branded Brass snap studs. Though they do offer some really subtle styling. The highlight is actually the Outlast technology inside the Jacket. Funny enough this stuff was originally developed for NASA. The idea is that this material can utilize phase changing materials that can absorb store and release heat to optimize thermal comfort. It’s pretty brilliant if you ask me.
I cannot do this jacket justice however without going back to the aesthetic of the Hamstall Outlast Wax Jacket. The detailing done in this jacket is incredible. From the soft leather trim piping on the collar and cuffs to the cross quilted out panel details. The jacket also features a suitable number of pockets to have enough for everything you might need on you during a ride out in town or a multi-day motorcycle trip. The pockets have nice feel and Merlin does good on their weatherproof promise in keeping the pockets moisture free.
The last little detail I need to focus on are the adjustment points you find on the cuffs, biceps, collar and hem. Merlin does a good job at making this jacket fit and making it fill comfortable. It’s nice to be able to adjust the jacket as you need to keep the ride that much more comfortable.
I’m going to continue buying my bike gear from Merlin. They’ve got a solid array of products and love their branding. Since I bought this jacket from them it seems like their bike gear inventory is only growing and I’m excited to see what else makes its way into my closet. Until next time, cheers.
