The primary message of this song is that we are all equal in the eyes of time. No one, nobody, has an advantage over you or me, even if they are extremely wealthy or famous. Time, for better, but usually for worse forces everyone and everything onto a "level playing field."

The song depicts a man, who has realized that he really has little control over his life because the true controller is time, over which he has no influence.

The initial verse describes how the singer notices that he is ruled by time, and there is no denying it. Especially after having his favorite beverage, time is nearly impossible to find. The opening lyrics are "I'm ruled by time, can't deny. Doesn’t seem like mine. After a glass of wine, time oh so hard to find." The second verse shows the singer feels that time is more of a state of mind than anything else.

The chorus describes how the singer says that people tell him to "take his time" but he really doesn't possess his "own time." Time is something that just happens and, when he looks for some, he can't find it and doesn't understand why. When he is forced to deal with a lack of time, he realizes that, even rich and famous people are in the same boat... Ruled by Time.
