Laser Assisted Hatching in IVF Treatment
The embryo, once it starts growing, right from the stage of the oocyte is protected by a layer which is surrounding it like a shell. This shell is called zona pellucida. This is the protective layer of an embryo in the body. When a lady conceives naturally, the embryo itself breaks the zona pellucida, comes out of the zona pellucida and gets attached to the endometrium of the uterus. This is called as attachment and invasion of the endometrial lining by the embryo.

Laser-Assisted hatching Procedure
Why do we need to do this process in assisted reproduction?
There are specific indications. In assisted reproduction a lot of times there is a process called vitrification or embryo freezing. This cause zona pellucida or protective shell to become harder than normal. As a result of this embryo might not be able to break the shell of its own. Therefore in vitrified embryo, Laser Assisted Hatching might be beneficial especially if the zona pellucida is thick. It can also benefit women who had multiple IVF failures as well in women who have good embryos but thick zona pellucida in the fresh cycle where the embryos are not vitrified.

Laser Assisted Hatching Technique
There is a specific technique of doing Lase Assisted Hatching. Its is to drill very fine holes with the help of laser. At the end of it once the embryo expands it comes out of it. It may assist in the implantation in the cases of women who had multiple IVF failures as well in women who have good embryos but thick zona pellucida in a fresh cycle where the embryos are not vitrified.

It is important to know that it does not increase the IVF success rate in all cases.
