The joyous and ceremonial preparations described in the song symbolise perhaps all the attentive and needful work to be done on the body-self before it may become worthy of the guru’s visit. As Kabir says in the end, "Oh yes, I looked far and wide for Hari, I found him all too near."

In 2011, we invited Mahesha Ram and his troupe to Bangalore for a 4-day ‘Learning with Kabir’ workshop designed as an immersive retreat for educators and artists. Mahesha ji would draw the participants into the spirit of satsang in the early mornings and late evenings. Rest of the day, some of us sat with him and recorded new and old songs from his very deep repertoire.

Mahesha ji uncovered some forgotten gems in the course of these recordings, and we were witness to how the oral traditions of song are held not in diaries but in the bodies of the singers, tapped through collective nudging and recall, and rediscovered with a sense of joy and wonder. You will see in the recording of this song the playful recalling of forgotten lyrics between the singers.
