Welcome to the Modhera Surya Temple, a masterpiece of ancient Indian architecture, located in the village of Modhera in Gujarat, on the banks of the Pushpavati river.
This magnificent temple was built in 1026-27 by King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty, also known as the Chaulukya dynasty. Inspired by the devotion to Surya, the Sun God, this temple stands as a symbol of Gujarat's rich heritage and artistic excellence. The Solankis, believed to be the descendants of Surya, dedicated this temple to honour their lineage.

As you approach the temple, you first come across the magnificent Surya Kund - a rectangular, stepped tank containing 108 small-scale temples for various deities, reflecting the advanced water management and devotion of the era. The three main temples, dedicated to Ganesha, Vishnu and the dancing Shiva, overlook the kund, adding to the spiritual diversity.

The temple complex has three aligned main parts: the Guda Mandapa or sanctum sanctorum, which once housed an idol of the sun and is famous for its perfect alignment with the equinox sunrise; the Sabha Mandapa or assembly hall, known for its intricately carved pillars and geometric patterns; and the sacred Surya Kund. Every surface of the temple is adorned with intricately detailed carvings of deities, dancers, animals and scenes of daily life - demonstrating the artistic mastery of the Maru-Gurjara or Chaulukya style.

One of the most notable features of the temple is its orientation. The temple is situated in such a way that at the time of the equinox, the first rays of the sun illuminate the sanctum sanctorum, revealing the architectural genius of its creators.

Although the temple is no longer used for worship, its beauty and heritage endure. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2022, recognizing its importance as a jewel of India's heritage.
