Our DNA is a long linear molecules, and many of the molecules in our cells are built to degrade or modify it, leaving it susceptible to unwanted alteration. In addition, our copying apparatus, DNA polymerase, seemingly cannot replicate the ends of DNA, shortening the strand.
Telomeres are protective caps at the end of DNA strands, which protect the ends from attack, whilst also serving as a buffer to DNA shortening, taking a hit for the team - so to speak.
Telomeres still shorten with replication however, leading to their eventual loss of integrity and function. This leaves the DNA open to damage, so often the cell is shut down (senescence). As we get older, and more of our cells reach replicative limit, telomere shortening is more widespread leading to wider cellular senescence.
