Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts has been participating in San Francisco's Carnaval since its inception in 1979.
This year, it is our honor to present Karimba Afrikans.
Comparsa Karimba Afrikans means African footprint. Karimba Afrikaan is an intergenerational komparsa that reflects families in the Mission District and honors the rich African ancestral roots of Latin America.
The Comparsa is a partnership with Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, who has been part of Carnaval continuously since its inception in 1979.
Cheo Gomez, Carnaval King 2022 from Zonacheo Entertainment and Chekumbe, an Afro-Colombian dance group.
Afro-Colombian Cheo Gomez has choreographed a two-part choreography. The first part of the choreography reflects a fusion of Latin movements and rhythms that are rooted in Afro Latino rhythms.
America that honors Mother Earth, wind, moon, water and sun. The dance movements reference the daily rituals of hunters and gatherers of the coast of Colombia.
This year's multidisciplinary arts production has deep significance for us. It is our response to the current socio-political challenges that are being faced by people of color and immigrants in our country today.
We are currently being oppressed by our government. And just like our African ancestors who broke the chains of slavery, we too break those chains of slavery through our freedom of expression and through our ancestral traditions and rituals that taught us to break free and to show love, joy, vibrancy, freedom and truth.
This dance represents all of our values and all of our strength as we come together as one, not only to entertain you, but to pass on a message of freedom and hope.
