The Murder of Mark Tildesley

Mark Anthony Tildesley was born the 31st August 1974 to parent’s John and Lavinia Tildesley.
During these holidays, the travelling funfair (Frank Ayres) had come to town and set up shop at Carnival Field off Wellington Road. The location of the fair was walking distance from Mark’s home (twelve-minute walk) and he was determined to go.

As Mark only got 30p a week in spending money and could not afford to go to the fair with that, he began collecting abandoned trollies and returning them to the Tesco’s. By doing this, Mark was able to cash in on the abandoned 10p’s left in the trollies.

1st June 1984:
On the afternoon of the 1st June, Mark walked to the local sweet shop on Denmark Street.
Here, Mark encountered an unfamiliar man who gave Mark a fifty pence piece to buy some sweets with.

It is also reported that the man told Mark that if he went to the fair, he should head directly to the dodgem’s as the man stated he worked there.
Later that day at around 5:30pm, Mark finished his dinner and rushed to the fair. Prior, he had promised his parents he would be home by 7:30pm.

His last words to his mother were “Don’t worry mum, I won’t be home late” and with this, he cycled off on his second-hand gold Raleigh Tomahawk.

At 7:30pm, Mark had not arrived home. By 8pm, John and Lavinia became worried.
Mark was not one to break his promises and it was unusual for him not to be back home at the time he stated.

Starting to feel more worried, they decided to drive to the fair and search for Mark.
Over an hour passed and Mark had still not been located, however, his bike was still chained to the entrance of the funfair.

On the 29th April 1987, police reported how there had been several attempted abductions in Wokingham, particularly towards young boys.

This then raised concerns that Mark’s disappearance could be linked to these potential abductions and so Operation Orchid was established.

In November 1985, fourteen-year-old Jason Swift had been raped and murdered by a paedophile group running within London.

The police used the case of Jason to begin their investigations and soon arrested their first suspect – Leslie Bailey.

He was later charged with the murder of Jason and six-year-old Barry Lewis, both of whom died during Mark’s disappearance.

‘On the night of Mark’s disappearance, Bailey had been asked by another gang member, and his lover, Lennie Smith, to drive from Hackney to Wokingham as there was to be a child sex abuse ‘party’ at a caravan owned by Cooke.

Upon arriving in Wokingham, Smith went to find Cooke while Bailey waited in his car on Langbourgh Road.

Cooke and Smith arrived moments later with Mark, who had been promised a 50p bag of sweets.

The two men physically lifted Mark into the car. Smith then sat in the front passenger seat while Cooke sat in the back – holding Mark down.

They then drove the short distance to Cooke’s caravan where they were met by Bailey’s family member, Odd Bod.

They all then went into the caravan where Cooke gave Mark a glass of milk laced with muscle relaxant and Valium.

Mark however only drank half of the milk – claiming that it tasted weird.

It was at this time, that the rapes began.

Cooke went first and Smith went last.

They then force-fed Mark more muscle relaxant, forcing it down his throat before continuing to rape him again, this time – Mark was gagged.

It was about half an hour after arriving at the caravan that Bailey reported telling the other’s that he thought Mark was dead because he could feel no pulse.

Cooke told him that Mark was fine and that once they were done, they would drop him off at home.

It soon occurred, however, that Bailey was right, and Mark was dead.

After the party, Bailey and Smith left together and drove back to Hackney.

Before going their separate ways, Smith told Bailey that Cooke would be the one to dispose of the body.’

I end with what happened to each defendant with regards to sentencing.
